Welcome from the class teacher

Hi my name is Alisha Noormohamed and I’ve worked at Parkside since 2019. I absolutely love being a teacher, it’s guaranteed that no two days are ever the same! The best part of teaching Year 1 is that you get to help little minds, face bigger challenges everyday!

Year 1 is children’s first year of key stage 1 curriculum. It’s a year where the children solidify what they’ve learnt in reception as well as develop themselves as learners and individuals of Parkside. I’ll give you a snapshot of the learning we cover... In one topic we go back in time to visit the 1950s and also Victoria schools, learning about what life was like then and comparing it to now. In geography, we learn about our planet: the 7 continents, 5 oceans, human features, physical features and the United Kingdom. In science, we learn about different materials, the human body and our senses. We use the outdoor grounds of our school to explore what different trees and wild plants we have too. Children really develop their ability to read with phonics and, like all children across England, have a phonics screening check to see if they know their sounds. Finally, in maths we start to learn our numbers to 100 and our number bonds to 10 and 20. We learn so much and, most importantly, have so much fun doing it!
