Welcome from the class teacher
Hi my name is Jess Holland and I am the Year 1 teacher at Parkside. I have recently started teaching at Parkside and I absolutely love it! There are so many exciting opportunities for the children. I absolutely love teaching in Year 1 because you get to see the children's excitement as they discover new things, as well as how they develop themselves as individuals.
In Year 1 we learn about so many amazing things across the year. We travel back to the 1950s, comparing what life was like back then to how it is now. In geography we learn about our planet, looking at the 7 continents, 5 oceans, physical features, human features and the United Kingdom. The children have opportunities to showcase their creativity, such as building shelters in DT, creating self-portraits in art and using their imagination in their writing. We also explore our numbers to 100 and learn our number bonds to 10 and 20. Across the year children develop their reading skills with phonics and, like all children across England, have a phonics screening check to see if they know their sounds.
Throughout the year we take advantage of our fantastic outdoor learning spaces, providing the children with different learning opportunities and first hand experiences. For example, in science we learn about the different seasons. This is a great opportunity for us to go on walks around the local area to spot the signs of each season.
